چکیده

The simulation of complex domains requires the acquisition and representation of domain knowledge at a level of detail appropriate for the needs of one or more intended simulations. The Conceptual Models of the Mission Space (CMMS) is a DOD effort to develop an integrated framework providing simulationindependent descriptions of real world processes, entities, environments, interactions, and relationships using a representation compatible with the Unified Modeling Language (UML) standard. The population of such domain-specific knowledge for simulations requires a formal knowledge acquisition (KA) and modeling effort, beginning with KA sessions with Subject Matter Experts (SME). Once acquired, the information must be analyzed, refined and modeled at the appropriate level of detail to achieve a desired level of simulation resolution. The Systems Engineering Process Activities (SEPA) is a formal process for the analysis and design of complex systems developed at the Laboratory for Intelligent Processes and Systems (LIPS) at the University of Texas at Austin. SEPA consists of seven activities: 1) knowledge acquisition with SMEs, 2) creation of the knowledge models derived from KA reports, 3) synthesis of the knowledge models for the creation of a consistent, complete domain model, 4) creation of the component-based reference architecture specifying inherent domain requirements, 5) specification of the formal application requirements for specific implementations, 6) creation of a component-based description of the application requirements, and 7) creation of the system design specification, i.e. an instance of a simulation system design. This paper discusses the application of the SEPA process and associated tools to guide the knowledge and systems engineers in the population of a CMMS model meeting particular simulation requirements.

Application of Rough Set Theory in Data Mining for Decision Support Systems (DSSs)

Decision support systems (DSSs) are prevalent information systems for decision making in many competitive business environments. In a DSS, decision making process is intimately related to some factors which determine the quality of information systems and their related products. Traditional approaches to data analysis usually cannot be implemented in sophisticated Companies, where managers ne...

Absorbing Markov Chain Models to Determine Optimum Process Target Levels in Production Systems with Rework and Scrapping

In this paper, absorbing Markov chain models are developed to determine the optimum process mean levels for both a single-stage and a serial two-stage production system in which items are inspected for conformity with their specification limits. When the value of the quality characteristic of an item falls below a lower limit, the item is scrapped. If it falls above an upper limit, the item is ...

SYSTEM MODELING WITH FUZZY MODELS: FUNDAMENTAL DEVELOPMENTS AND PERSPECTIVES

In this study, we offer a general view at the area of fuzzy modeling and fuzzymodels, identify the visible development phases and elaborate on a new and promisingdirections of system modeling by introducing a concept of granular models. Granularmodels, especially granular fuzzy models constitute an important generalization of existingfuzzy models and, in contrast to the existing models, generat...

Conceptual and numerical models of the evolution of pedogenic carbonates in soils of arid and semi-arid regions: A review

Introduction Calcareous soils are widely distributed in arid and semi-arid regions of the world and the presence of carbonates in the soils affects both physicochemical properties and the pedogenic evolution. In addition, soil carbon plays a critical role in the global carbon cycle, and pedogenic carbonates are an important sink for atmospheric carbon. Pedogenic carbonates are also the proxy o...

Elicitation Strategies for Web Application Using Activity Theory

Requirements engineering (RE) is often seen as an essential facet in software development. It is a vital process before each project starts. In the context of systems engineering, an understanding and application of systems theory and practice is also relevant to RE. The contexts in which RE takes place habitually involve human activities. Therefore, RE needs to be sensitive to how people perce...
